Since November 2011 the National Agency for Intangible Cultural Heritage of the Austrian Commission for UNESCO decided to include the “Viennese coffeehouse culture” as a so called “social practice” in the national register of intangible cultural heritage

Inspired by the historic roots of Vienna as the “Coffee Capital of the World,” we questioned why, despite Austria’s culinary richness, its Kaffeehaus had yet to make a mark internationally.

“The Kaffeehaus is a place where time and space are consumed, but only the coffee is on the bill,” is how the UNESCO Austrian Committee describes the peculiarity of the Viennese Kaffeehaus tradition.
